Customer Care Tips

Want to ensure the health of your vehicle for years to come? At Hogan’s Jif-E Lube, our goal is to provide the expert preventative maintenance and advice necessary to keep your car in good working order. Take a look at the following tips and tricks to keep your car running smoothly for miles on end.

Why should I change my oil?

Oil for car

High temperatures can cause motor oil to break down and become a less effective lubricant. Without proper lubrication, parts of your engine can rub together, resulting in damaging wear and tear. While the additives in motor oil are designed to help neutralize acids, over time they get used up and become ineffective. Once the oil becomes saturated with unabsorbed water, dust, and other byproducts of combustion, corrosion occurs in the motor.

How often should I change my oil?

When determining how often to change your vehicle’s oil, it’s important to consider the following factors:

  • The Condition and Age of Your Vehicle’s Engine

  • The Weather and Road Conditions Where You Drive

  • Your Style of Driving (Do You Have a Lead Foot? Pull Trailers or Heavy Loads?)

In general, the more wear and tear on your vehicle, the more diligent you need to be in changing the oil.

How can I improve my gas mileage?

You Can Take Some Simple Steps to Improve Fuel Efficiency:

  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated. An underinflated tire causes excess wear on the outside edges, producing greater resistance and reducing gas mileage. Have your tire pressure checked frequently, especially when the weather changes.

  • Check and change your air filter regularly. A dirty or clogged filter can reduce gas mileage by throwing off the fuel-to-air ratio inside your motor. If your motor can't draw in enough air, it will use more fuel.

  • Have your fuel system cleaned with injector cleaners or install a new fuel filter. Sand, dirt, and other impurities can clog your fuel filter and starve your injectors, hindering engine performance and reducing fuel efficiency.

Transmission Fluid

Why and when should I change my transmission fluid?

Automatic transmissions contain gears that deliver power from the engine to the wheels. Transmission fluid cools and lubricates the gears. Over time, transmission fluid degrades and its ability to lubricate and cool diminishes, leading to overheating. Dirty transmission fluid appears dark brown, instead of a bright pinkish-red, and can smell burnt. It may also become thicker as it gets more saturated by waste byproducts. By changing your transmission fluid regularly, you can help prevent premature wear and tear on your transmission.

Why should I change my air filter?

An air filter is an accordion-shaped barrier that provides clean air to your vehicle's cylinders. As air is pulled through the filter, it enters the intake manifold before being ushered into the cylinders. Driving with a dirty filter can prevent cylinders from getting enough air. This throws off the mixture of fuel and air the motor receives, resulting in poor fuel economy and causing the motor to work harder.

Why should I worry about the air pressure in my tires?

Maintaining proper air pressure helps ensure your tires wear more evenly and last longer. Driving with under or overinflated tires can result in the following:

  • Uneven Tread Wear

  • Weakened Tires

  • Reduced Traction

  • Lower Gas Mileage

  • Reduced Miles From a Set of Tires

  • Increased Chance of Flats or Blowouts

The penny trick is an effective method of checking the wear of your tires at home. Take a penny and insert it head down into the tread groove. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to get new tires.

How do I winterize my car?

Here Are a Few Tips For Winterizing Your Car:

  • Have your anti-freeze fluid level and freezing point checked (Free with your oil change at Hogan’s Jif-E Lube by request!)

  • Check your wiper blades. Replace your wiper blades every 6 to 12 months.

  • Check your battery so you don’t get stranded in the cold.

  • Consider treating your windows with RainX, which significantly improves visibility when driving in wet winter weather.

  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated to handle winter road conditions.
